History of the origin of La Tomatina

It is impossible to say how and where the tomato festival started because there are many different stories about it. For example, some Spaniards believe that one day, the people of Bonol, who were very dissatisfied with their mayor, started throwing tomatoes at him. And that was the beginning of the tomato festival. In another narration, it is stated that the locals threw tomatoes at each other for fun and entertainment, and due to the enjoyable nature of the game, this issue gradually spread.

In another story, it is said that there was a fight at a party where tomatoes were thrown at one person, and some Spanish people think that throwing tomatoes at each other is very fun.

But it looks like they did it again the following year.

This incident was repeated for several years, and each time, the police dispersed the crowd. However, the game of tomato tossing became less and less popular, drawing people from neighboring towns to participate. In ten years, the authorities agreed to hold the festival only a few times, and each time, they changed their minds the following year. Finally, in 1957, after the festival’s popularity, it was decided to make the festival official as long as people followed specific rules and restrictions

Of course, you should know that this “bloody battle” is not quickly licensed. In the early years, the Spanish government did not accept the gathering. The security forces stopped the tomato festival Minutes after the start. On the other hand, some people strongly opposed this, saying that this amount of tomatoes should not be wasted. Participants should not be harmed and incur additional medical costs for the government; the streets should not be dirty. They protested by carrying a giant coffin in which tomatoes were placed. A man named “Francisco Franco,” one of the religious leaders of Valencia, played a vital role in the failure of the Latomatina Festival; He considered this to be secular and far from religion.

However, years later, with conditions, the festival was held with complete freedom, and the municipality provided even the tomatoes that were the necessary materials for the festival. Although it costs a lot of money for city officials to make tomatoes for the festival, it is still celebrated. One of the reasons is that the Spaniards believe tomatoes have antiseptic properties.

due to security issues, from 2013 onwards, it was decided that only 20,000 lucky people could enter the food-throwing festival. Despite these restrictions, the tomato festival is still trendy; if you want to participate, you must buy your ticket soon.
